Hi. I’m Lisa Brathwaite and I’m an emerging playwright.
You know how it’s said that you should look to your childhood interests and activities for clues to what you might find as a fulfilling career in your adulthood?
Yeah, well, some years ago, after wandering as a parched misfit in a professional desert, I awakened to my early remembrances of writing books and songs and poems and participating in storytelling contests and taking an “Actors & Actresses” class and writing a slew of short plays for reading group projects in Miss Behrmann’s 4th grade class at Indiana Avenue School #18…
Mind you, all that took place before boobs and boys and brain-bending towards looking at “real” career pursuits.
But then one day, in this process of recollection, something resonated with me: “I am a playwright…”
This breakthrough discovery couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, because I didn’t major in anything remotely like theatre in college and I now share a life with a husband with whom I have two children who I’m trying to raise healthily. And it’s widely known that the theatre/playwriting lifestyle is SO conducive to coupledom and motherhood—-particularly for moms rearing children still in the home and under the age of 18. NOT!
So as I’m starting pretty green on this “pursue the playwriting” journey, I’m looking for inspiration and wanting to inspire moms and others who may find themselves in the same predicament—-late to the dance, but determined to boogie the night away and hustle ‘til the light of day. There may be a Pulitzer waiting on the other side of morning!
I’m crazy enough to believe it can happen—-a rewarding career and a family who grows dear. It’s just going to require a little more creativity. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. In fact, I’m eager to learn and share. That’s why I’ve created this space. If you’ve got two cents on a matter, by all means, toss it into the fountain.
